Schools targeted by vandals

Several Richmond schools have been targeted by vandals over the summer holidays, leaving principals frustrated at the “acts of stupidity”. Waimea College, Garin College and Salisbury School have been subject to graffiti and attempted arson over the school holidays and the culprits have yet to be caught.

Unfortunately, there was also some unwanted drama with one cowboy breaking his leg when the bull he was sitting on charged at the gates in the mounting pen. The rider was thrown from the bull as soon as the gates opened and managed to limp to safety. The bull was also injured and had to be put down which Tina says is a rare occurrence at the Richmond Rodeo. James Pinfold won the bare back bronc, Paul Robinson, Graeme Gannon and Ross Dowling were first equal in the saddle bronc, Justine Davis won the barrel racing and Len Mackey and Nye Harborne won the teaming roping. Tina says it was an “brilliant crowd, which stayed “right to the end”.

Car rolls into river, just misses swimmer Simon Bloomberg

A swimmer in the Roding River in Aniseed Valley had a near miss when a car plunged off a cliff at the White Gates Reserve and into the water just three or four metres from where they were standing. The parked car rolled down a slope and over the six metre cliff into the river at the popular swimming and picnic spot last Thursday afternoon at about 3pm. A swimmer in the river below watched in horror as the car flew through the air and plunged into the river just metres away. Police said it was fortunate that nobody was hurt. The swimmer was lucky the car missed them while the passengers had got out of the car before it started rolling down the slope towards the cliff. The owner and passengers of the car, which had only just been purchased and was uninsured, tried desperately to stop it rolling over the cliff, but it was going too fast. "It started moving and I opened the door and tried to pull up the handbrake, but it

One of the owner's friends also tried to stop the car rolling over the cliff by pushing it back up the slope, but the car had too much momentum. Although the driver said he had put the handbrake on when they parked, police suggested the brake may not have been fully engaged. The car's automatic transmission may also have slipped out of park. Tasman District Council staff were called to help clean up a

small amount of oil which had spilled from the car's sump, which was damaged as it went over the cliff. The council’s reserves and facilities manager Beryl Wilkes says the council may consider installing a barrier across the front of the cliff after Thursday's incident. "I haven't had a chance to talk to the staff member who went out there on Thursday, but it's something we would look at," Beryl says. The owner of the car and his friends towed the damaged car out of the river later that same day.

Kempthorne will stand for mayor again

Tasman district mayor Richard Kempthorne will be seeking a fourth consecutive term as mayor and a sixth term on council at this year’s elections. Richard says he enjoys contributing to the community in his leadership role as mayor and would like to continue for another three years. “I enjoy it and I think I do a good job, so I’ll be standing again. Chef ready to wow at Sarau Simon Bloomberg Organisers of the Sarau Festival in Upper Moutere are taking the approach that 'if it’s not broken, then don’t fix it,' with this Sunday’s ninth edition featuring all the same “tried-and-true” attractions that have made it one of Nelson’s most popular events. The festival was first held in 2008 as a celebration of the arts, crafts and food of the Moutere Valley. It has always featured a number of popular foodie events that reflect the importance of blackcurrants to the district’s economy and organiser Jenny Leith says this year is no different. “We’ve got Angela Kernohan from Melrose House Cafe doing the Sujon cooking demonstrations this year,” Jenny says. “The cooking demonstrations are always one of the big attractions so there was no point in changing anything. We did have some new ideas but decided it was better and easier to just focus on the tried-and-true formula that has worked in the past.” Angela’s demonstrations are scheduled to start at 3.30pm and 5pm. Jenny says the competition is free and entries need to be taken to the competition tent by 4pm

on the day. All baking needs to covered and any food that needs to be kept cold should be in suitable containers. New Zealand Hops chief executive Doug Donelan will also hold a seminar in the Grown in Moutere tent at 4pm. The photo competition is another popular event and people attending the fair will be able to win a prize by identifying where a selection of photos from around the Moutere Valley were

taken. There will be over 100 stall holders selling food, drinks, arts and crafts, as well as live entertainment. There will be plenty to keep the children entertained as well, with a range of activities in the Kidszone. The fair will be held at the Moutere Hills Community Centre on the Moutere Highway and starts at 3pm and finishes at about 9pm. Entry is $5 for adults, with children free.

Chemical scare leaves man in hospital Simon Bloomberg A man was taken to Nelson Hospital after being overcome by fumes, and roads were closed in central Richmond on Monday morning after a chemical incident at Richmond School. Emergency services were called to the school on Cambridge St at around 9am after a maintenance worker was overcome by strong chlorine fumes coming from the pool pump shed. Sections of Oxford and Cambridge streets were closed off by police who redirected traffic. Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade’s senior station officer and incident controller, Blair Hall, says two crews from Richmond, two from Stoke and two from Richmond were called to the school. He says chemicals used for treating the pool, including chlorine, became volatile after being inadvertently mixed up in the pump shed and overpowered the man. Blair says the area was ventilated by firefighters wearing special protective gear. The man was treated at the scene by St John ambulance staff and transported to Nelson Hospital in a stable condition. He was treated and discharged later that week.

Weeds in Stoke stream: Stream edges in parts of Stoke have become “rampant” with weeds, which are so thick that one resident has deemed them to be a flood risk. Marye Miller contacted Nelson Live, concerned about the amount of what she says are “noxious weeds” growing amongst native plants in and around the Orchard Stream Garden, and other parts of the stream along The Ridgeway and further up Marlowe St. She says she has noticed that the weeds have been growing progressively over the last year and, despite contacting Nelson City Council three times about the weeds, she has not been given any answers. Alec Louverdis, Group Manager Infrastructure at the council, says that spraying work has been carried out on the worst of the weeds, and a follow up control has been programmed for after the holiday break.

Brittany Spencer Local brothers Alex and Sam Moreu shredded up the competition at the final Tasman Skatepark Tour. The boys have toured the region’s skateparks, competing in every heat of the competition sponsored by Village Cycles and Cheapskates. Younger brother, Alex just edged out big brother Sam to win the junior skate section with style. “It’s awesome I won, it was so much fun and I love skateboarding,” says eight-year-old Alex. Older brother Sam doesn’t mind being beaten but he’s looking for redemption next year. “The competition is great, I can’t wait until the next one!” The boys’ father Mike Moreu says he couldn’t be prouder. “I’m so proud of the boys, they put a lot of effort into it and they just love skateboarding.” Mike says their family spend over 15 hours at the skatepark each week. “It’s really fun watching them develop and it’s also just really fun sharing it with them, going out and skating with them.” “We got into it as a family last year and it’s just been one big great adventure since, you can’t keep them off their boards,” says Mike. Alex and Sam skate everything from penny boards to Popsicle decks, long boards and even surf skateboards. And their collection is still growing, Sam took home a deck while Alex takes home a custom board and a $400 voucher from Cheapskates for winning the comp. Nelsonians more likely to pitch a tent Nelsonians are more likely to go camping than other kiwis, according to a recent survey. The study was commissioned by a campervan company to look at kiwis’ holiday habits and it showed that Nelsonians have the highest percentage of tent ownership in the country. Sixty-three per cent of Nelsonians own a tent, far more than the national average of 47 per cent. The survey was conducted with over 10,000 respondents across New Zealand. The results come as no surprise to co-owner of MD Outdoors, Mike Smithers. “There’s definitely a camping culture in Nelson,” says Mike. “It’s a passed-down family tradition of just going out and doing it, the parents do it and then the kids get the bug. They’ll go out, grab a two person tent and throw it in the car as teenagers, and tramp

places like Momorangi Bay every summer. “My business partner has an annual family holiday in Totaranui, while best friends of

ours will pick up the canvas tent and pitch it in Totaranui for two weeks almost every holiday.” Kaiteriteri Beach Motor Camp

manager Dennis Petch says the campground is full with locals this summer. “We get a lot of people coming up from Christchurch, but we always get plenty of locals from the Nelson-Tasman area.” Torpedo 7’s stock controller Anne Duboffon says that locals definitely buy a lot of tents. “We’ve sold 571 tents over the last year, 160 of those were in December alone. They’re all different types, but the most popular ones are the small hiking tents and the big canvas tents that people just chuck in their car and pitch up for a week or two,” says Anne. The survey also revealed that Nelson has the highest percentage of travellers, with 65 per cent of people saying they have taken a 10-day trip either overseas or in NZ in the last year. The survey was commissioned by RV Super Centre.

Tug of Peace to raise money for Hospice

It’s time to take the strain for the annual Tug of Peace challenge. Now in its 17th year, the competition raises funds and awareness for the Nelson Tasman Hospice, which relies on community donations and Government funding to operate.

Nelmac have dominated the mens’ event over the past six years and are challenging other teams to take them on next Wednesday, January 27, at 12.30pm in upper Trafalgar St. The teams they have come up against in the past include Talley’s, Sealords, ANZ, the Police and Fire services.

“We really appreciate the support of the companies who take part in the event and allow their staff to participate,” says Hospice fundraising manager Paul McIntyre. “Nelmac have been big supporters but it’s about time someone took them on and claimed bragging rights as the toughest

company in town. “It’s through events like these that we can raise funds so that the hospice can continue to offer such an excellent service to the people of Nelson and Tasman.” ANZ staff will be walking through the crowds with donation buckets.

Playcentre to host anniversary day fair

Jessie Johnston Richmond Playcentre welcomes the public to their annual Washbourn Gardens Fair. For around six years the garden market event has been the major fundraiser for the centre, which uses it for general running costs that aren’t covered by grants. This year the fair will be held on Monday, February 1, Nelson Anniversary Day, and will feature over 80 stalls, from balloon animals and face painting to keep the kids entertained, to plants, clothing and other unique items made by local crafts people. There will also be a range of dance

performances including Irish dancing, jazz, ballet, and demonstrations of Zumba and belly dancing, not to mention a selection of food and drink vendors. Richmond Playcentre will have a stall set up on the day with raffles and a silent auction available for people to enter, plus information for anyone interested in learning more about the centre. Donation buckets will also be floating around and Richmond Playcentre appreciate any donation people can afford. Come along to the garden fair for a fun day in the sun and the chance to support a local organisation. The event will be running from 9am until 2:30pm.

Kite festival success means it could be back

Jessie Johnston Kites of all shapes and sizes took to the skies over Neale Park on Sunday for the 25th annual Nelson Summer Kite Festival. The event is the longest running provincial kite festival in New Zealand and 2016 was a huge success, says coordinator and member of the Nelson Kite Club, Ted Howard. “It was much bigger than we expected, it was bigger than last year, much bigger. We suspect somewhere round 4000-5000 people came through, it was pretty busy all day.” Around 35-45 people made up the main display of kites in the centre of the park, which included a massive whale and dolphin, a dog, a dragon and a unicorn. Kite-fliers came from around the country as well as from Luxembourg, Singapore, UK, USA, Australia and Holland to attend the festival. Ted says that while the event isn’t promoted as an international festival, it’s getting such a good reputation with international fliers, who have experienced overseas kite festivals featurLast days of ing crowds of around 70,000. Organisers also took the opportunity to seek donations from the public and were overwhelmed with the response. Upon returning to Nelson, we noticed a real lack of adventure and sightseeing tourism here compared to the rest of the south. Also, Nelson has the worst public toilets by a country mile. Club member Baden Biggs says people can expect to see all manner of vintage pieces, including tractor competitions such as the slow race, where the last person back takes first place. There will also be three steam traction engines and a steam road roller on display which Baden says is rare for the Nelson-Tasman region. The sawmill will be operating, along with an old, hand-fed hay baler, and for

the kids, the railway jigger and traction engine with trailer will be taking passengers around the park. As well as offering people the chance to see history in action, the vintage engine and machinery show is also a fundraiser for the club to help improve the park’s facilities. Entry into the event is $5 for adults with children under-13 free. There will be plenty of food and drink available.

Students can learn anything from mechanical engineering to aquaculture, health and support services and hospitality. Tramper rescued after 10 metre fall A French tramper was airlifted out of Mt Richmond Forest Park, near Nelson, last week after falling some 10 metres off a mountain ridge. The Nelson Marlbourough Rescue Helicopter was called to locate and winch out the injured 43-year-old from near Mt Rintoul in the park. The man had been tramping the alpine route with friends when he stumbled and fell approximately eight to ten metres off a ridgeline – injuring his shoulder. The injured Frenchman was treated at the scene, before he was winched on board the helicopter for transport to Nelson Hospital’s emergency department.

Golfers help provide fresh water in Africa Kate Russell

Golfing legends Sir Bob Charles and Susan Farron will be gracing the Nelson Golf Club this Friday, as special guests for the Water for Prosperity charity golf tournament. The tournament is raising funds for the charity’s upcoming trip to Zimbabwe this June to install clean drinking water for residents in the town of Torwood. It will be the second time Sir Bob Charles has been involved in the tournament, but it is the first time Susan Farron, PGA professional and president of the New Zealand Professional Golfers Association, has come on board. Water for Prosperity spokesman David Barnes says are “delighted” to be hosting both golfers this year, who will also be holding a complementary coaching clinic for entrants at 11:30am before a shotgun start at 12:30pm. “It’s a great opportunity for people to meet Sir Bob – he’s a living legend,” says David. “It’s hard to get anyone better.” David says they are aim-

who previously had to walk hours to the nearest stream to collect dirty water. “Prior to us going there, much of the town had no electricity or water and children spent 10 hours a day fetching water from streams, which are

highly polluted,” says David. “The people are incredibly unhealthy from it and riddled with water-borne diseases.” Each bore hole costs NZ $7000, taking roughly one day to install. And, according to David, the resident’s reactions are priceless. “They come out in their hundreds and they’re crying and singing when the water comes up,” he says. “They can’t believe it - it’s absolutely life changing. The work we’re doing there is huge. Not only do they have clean water for drinking, but they can use it for irrigation and grow their own crops.” David reckons they’ll need to go back next year to put in another five bore holes, but in the meantime is looking forward to what should be an exciting tournament on Friday. World’s best competes against local shearers

The pace at the annual Tapawera Shearing competition was red hot, with world champion shearer Rowland Smith joining the best shearers from Tasman and Marlborough on Saturday. The Hastings shearer and Feilding’s Aaron Haynes were star performers at the competition which is part of the Top of the South shearing circuit. Rowland has also competed at the Lumsden and Winton competitions and is heading to the Balclutha event next. Rowland also won the Tapawera Hotel Speed Shearer held in the hotel on Saturday night, shearing a lamb in a superfast 24.30 seconds. Aaron was second in 26.38sec with Jotham Rentoul the fastest Tapawera shearer.

Rain contaminates water supply There is a permanent boil water notice in place for the Dovedale Rural Water Scheme. The Tasman District Council issued the notice last Friday after recent heavy rain resulted in an increased sediment load in the Dovedale supply. This has caused the chlorine level in the water to drop as the sediment effectively soaks up the chlorine. Council says the boil water notice is for all drinking water, including water used for food preparation, utensil washing, washing your

teeth, pet’s drinking water and ice making. Council says the sediment level at the source has now dropped back to normal. The chlorinator is operating effectively which means the chlorine level in the system will gradually rise over the next few days allowing the boil water notice to be lifted. There are no other boil water notices in place for the Tasman district. Any queries regarding the notice call the council on 5438400.

The streets of Nelson will be overrun with comedy and fun this week as the annual buskers festival swings into action. The Nelson Buskers Festival runs from Thursday until Sunday with performances on Trafalgar St and at the Boathouse. The performers are coming from all corners of the globe, including Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom and Australia. Their acts range from ninja juggling to acrobatics and unicycling. The daytime performances at the top of Trafalgar St run on Thursday and Friday from 11am to 2.30pm and on Saturday from 10.30am to 2pm. The Buskers on Church Steps performances are on Saturday and Sunday nights from 6pm. Buskers in the Boathouse is the only ticketed event during the festival. It will be held on Thursday and Friday nights from 8pm. Tickets are $30 pre-sale or $38 on the door. Tickets from TicketDirect outlets.

Friday night marked the start of the Nelson Weekly Regatta Week and five days of exciting sailing competition in the Tasman Bay. The inaugural Liquorland Top of the South Trailer Yacht and Speed Boat Regatta began with an invitational race on Friday night, offering waterfront diners a sailing spectacle as crews completed three laps of the harbour. The local and visiting boats then went on to compete on both Saturday and Sunday in Tasman Bay, before their regatta came to a close with prize-giving on Sunday evening. Winners of the Trailer Yacht competition, based on a handicap, was Rattle & Hum. Skipper Craig Welsh says he was thrilled with the competition. "The weather was great, the sailing was fair and the club has been really friendly and welcoming," he says. "We'll be back." For winning the competition, the Christchurch-based team won the "Rum Cup", which was donated by Nelson Weekly. The cup came with a bottle of rum for the winners to enjoy from the cup. In second place was Honk n Jack and in third was Nelson-based Eagle. Eagle skipper Mark Howard says he was thrilled to have out-of-town boats to sail against. "We've got a growing trailer yacht fleet and until now we haven't had a regatta, we've had to travel out of town."

He says this event will only get more popular because it is a form of sailing that's "affordable". "It's an entry level to get into sailing, it's not expensive but they're fast. They're fun and responsive and you don't have to store them at the marina. You just take them with you." By introducing the Liquorland Top of the South Trailer Yacht and Speed Boat Regatta to the sailing calendar, hosts Tasman Bay Cruising Club hope to give out-of-town sailors the chance to spend some time cruising and competing around the beautiful Tasman Bay and Abel Tasman National Park. On Monday, keel boat crews raced their way to Torrent Bay, while on Tuesday they will compete in a short race round Tonga Island before making their way up through the national park and coming to rest in Tarakohe Harbour. Top drag racers heading to Nelson The NZDRA ‘Southern Nationals’ New Zealand Championship event rolls into the Nelson region on Saturday, February 6, with visiting racers attending from as far away as Invercargill and Auckland. It’s just a sixteen hour tow, says southern man Bruce Smith, who is looking forward to his first event after a two year rebuild of the car. "The engine is a fuel-injected Aria Fontana 540 cubic inch rear engine ‘Supercharged Outlaw’ car with a 1471 blower on top. Her best time has been a 7.02 sec at 189mph. Motueka racer and NZ Champion in 2012, Craig Griffith, will head down to the local Rock FM Dragway at Motueka Airfield, and will be putting up a stiff challenge to Bruce and the key racers from the north, Paul Davison of Upper Hutt and Cameron Patterson of Pukekohe. Craig has run a personal best of 7.04 seconds ET and 192 mph in his 'Fluid Power Solutions’ race car. The Upper Hutt Glass sponsored Supercharged

Outlaws competition is the key feature class for the ‘Southern Nationals’. The Super Stock and Top Street classes will also feature top competition.
